DEPRESSION IS A TRICK ON THE MIND–AND SUICIDE IS NOT THE ANSWER: A Think-Piece by Shekinah Wokoma.

The brain which when compared to most parts of the body is regarded as small in its visible size has been proven by scientists to be the most important part of the body and it is better to have a functioning brain and a lifeless body than vice versa.
Rhonda Byrne said “every single second is an opportunity to change your life, because in any moment you can change the way you feel.”
The brain as we have been taught in elementary biology, is the receptor and communicator of feelings to the body such as pain, joy, strength, weakness, love, hate and as many as you can think of.
Unfortunately, man has downplayed the power given by God to control the brain and subsequently has submitted his feelings (joy, pain etc) to external factors and events which over the years has taken responsibility for how man feels, thinks and even reacts.
We have now subjected our happiness to material things such as money, cars, landed properties etc (mind you, I desire these material things too). We have given our power and authority over our feelings to external factors like financial problems, heartbreak, disappointment and as many more as you can name.
Science, in its quest for understanding the human physiology, has exposed to us the hormones that aid happiness and other beautiful feelings such as Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin and Endorphins and amazingly science also tells us that we can regulate how these hormones are transmitted to the brain.
As a man thinketh so is he”- A brief Biblical sentence with a very powerful underlying message which a lot of people, including “Christians” have never looked deeply into.
We live in a world where depression has become the order of the day and a lot of youths are pressurized into taking their own lives.
On the first link when you Google “depression meaning” you will see where it says “self doubt creeps in and that swiftly turns to depression”. I underline the word self doubt. This simply means that an individual doubts himself and it leads to depression.

IT ALL STARTS WITH YOU and of a truth ,ONLY YOU CAN BRING IT TO AN END.
External events are not always under your control but you can control your reactions or response to them. Someone, maybe your teacher, friend or even parents doubted you… do you have to doubt yourself? Your teacher calls you a failure, do you have to believe him or her that you are a failure?
Understanding the rule of doubting your doubt is one step to living a happy life. Understanding that you are the master of your life, your thoughts and actions is a step to greatness.
Happiness, joy, pain, pleasure and every other feeling comes from within. External events are not always under your control but you control your reactions to same.
The stoics believe that a man is not what he says but what he does. Do not just have good feelings in your head, act it.
Practicing these steps is difficult but I have to ask you, does anything good come easy? Does getting to the zenith of your career come easily? We all know the answer.
With our level of education, exposure and any nomenclature we decide to give our generation, we are still unable to understand the power of the mind and strive to attain mastery of same and have subsequently succumbed more to the powers of external forces.
Your life apart from whatever supreme being you believe in,lies in your hands. You and you alone has the power to unlock your hidden potential.
Today, I want every person reading this to start his or her day with some words of self encouragement, some words of hope, self worth, positivity and conviction of happiness. I want us to get down from our beds every morning with the vibe that says “another day to conquer”.
Suicide is an option for the weak. ONLY THE STRONG WILL CONTINUE.
